Interstellar Pen Pals - EP

by Josh Zimmerman

The letters started arriving around three months ago. A blindingly intense light would glow outside my window for a few seconds, followed by a whooshing noise, and suddenly the mailbox was full. They were all addressed to me, but the return address was written in a language I'd never seen before. Most of the letters were written in English, yet they still perplexed me. They spoke of acidic purple seas, blue trees with golden leaves, silver cities built atop the clouds, and a sky lit by seven suns. Intrigued, I copied the return address and sent a letter back, and followed the original sender's example by writing about my town, and the country as a whole. It wasn't long before a reply arrived, asking for more information about myself and where I live. I was sure that my mysterious friend was from far away, though I was unsure where, exactly. The correspondence continued, with new letters arriving almost daily, and my replies being sent out just as rapidly. This morning, instead of an envelope, I discovered a tiny package in my mailbox when the lights outside my window had faded. Inside was a photo of a bizarrely purple planet, a mysterious machine, and a single, very short letter:

"I'm going to be in the neighborhood soon. I'll be sure to pay you a visit."
